I'm Ernesto Gastelum. Navy veteran, served from January 2010 to November 2019. Those years shaped me more than I can really put into clean words. They gave me structure, grit, and a way of pushing through things even when life isn’t exactly cooperating.
Before the Navy I was a high school wrestler — All-American, state champion. Wrestling was where I learned discipline early on. No shortcuts, no excuses, just work and whatever you can handle mentally on a bad day.
Right now I’m at Arizona State University working toward becoming a counselor for veterans and military members. That’s the goal — to be there for people who’ve been through things most people don’t really understand unless they lived it.
This past year hit me hard after losing my fiancée. I’m still finding my balance again. Not in some perfect inspirational way — just real life, day by day. But it also changed how I see people, and how much I value showing up for others when things are heavy.
I’m not trying to be perfect or polished. I’m just trying to keep building something meaningful out of everything I’ve been through, and use it to help somebody else along the way.
